SS and SSI are programs administered by the Social Security Administration. Both programs are often confused by clients and professionals alike.
SS is an earned benefit. That is, the client must pay into SS through wages (W-2) or net earnings from self employment. SS is Retirement, Disability, Dependents, Survivors and Medicare.
SSI is a needs based (welfare) benefit. In order to qualify the SSI program evaluates: Citizenship or Legal Admission to the US, Marital Status, Living Arrangements and State of Residence, Income and Resources. SSI benefits are: Disabled — 1 day to 64 years 11 months; Aged — 65 years up; Blind — any age.
